This academic year, team players Janet Mulford and Lillian Nikoi joined the English Language Learner (ELL) program at KICS to support non-native English speakers who encounter challenges in their class resulting from a language barrier.
The ultimate goal of the English Language Learner program, a program within the Student Support Department, is to build students’ confidence and skills in speaking and reading comprehension so they are able to thrive confidently and independently in a classroom with their peers. To achieve this target, Janet and Lillian work with students, whether one-on-one or in small groups, using various methods, resources and approaches.
Although Lillian’s home country is Ghana, she joined KICS from England with her husband, Gottfried, KICS’ high school math teacher, as well as their two children. “We’re blessed with two beautiful girls, one of whom is “Graced” to be reading by the age of four.” Lillian is passionate about sharing the gospel with anyone, irrespective of culture or gender. Listening to Christian worship songs and singing are among her favorite hobbies.
As the primary ELL instructor, Lillian supports students by focusing on English reading through phonics, while integrating fun activities that help students grow in conversation skills. Her several years of working with children have brought many fascinating and fulfilling opportunities her way, whether through activities, teaching, chatting, or mentoring. It is a great joy to see students who could barely express themselves in English out of fear or uncertainty be able to improve their communication skill. Also, seeing students who are able to improve tremendously in reading within very short length of time, is very satisfying!” Lillian strongly believes that every student has the ability to perform brilliantly through Jesus Christ who is our help and strength. (Philippians 4:13).
Janet Mulford is from the United States and has taught students of all ages in several countries. She has been a Christian for forty-seven years, in missions for over thirty years, and loves serving Christ. One intriguing fact about Janet is she is a certified scuba diver and loves the ocean.
Janet is the head ELL specialist and focuses primarily on secondary students. “Each week my students write in journals, listen to famous speeches, discuss and write about them, use different types of writing skills, and spend a day on conversation activities.”
Once a month Janet’s students give a ten minute speech in English. “I was delighted to watch our secondary students give ten minute speeches in English, complete with introductions, body and conclusions. Very organized and very well done! They are really growing in their English skills,” Janet remarks.
Lillian and Janet’s work at KICS is a reflection of the passion they have for teaching their students. Their prayer is as the school population continues to expand, they will have the resources necessary to help more and more students reach their potential without any hindrances or blocks to education.
